Jay Alan Babcock. Repetitive, Retro and sometimes humorous...
Opening Night, Saturday October 5, 6-10p
Exhibits through October 26
Artist Talk on Thursday October 24, 7pm
"Jay Alan Babcock is burdened by the problem of finding the meaning of individual identity in a world of seven billion people. One is shaped by accidents of the time when one is born, where one lives, one's genetic inheritance, class, and a multitude of social and environmental pressures. A person has choices, too: what group with which one identifies, what personal traits to emphasize or conceal, to what one aspires.
Babcock's drawings and paintings use pattern and repetition of recognizable portrait schemes to explore these themes. Some suggest the data collection enabled by computer algorithms, or diagrams of genetic transmission. Others probe the extent of personal expression within the constraints of representational templates. The materials and process are modest, but the method captures déjà vu".
